Questions of Preservation
Related to many of the papers presented here is the question of preservation. Digitization is great, but who decides what gets digitized what does not? To what extent does digitization result in prioritizing certain print runs or certain editions over others? In my own field, the digitization efforts in China have been so extensive that it is nowadays very rare for any young scholar of early twentieth-century Chinese magazines to have ever held the originals in their hands, to know how big or small they were, or what the paper they were printed on felt like. How are other countries/governments/libraries dealing with the preservation of magazines (and newspapers and their supplements)?
